Reduce Your Bills with a Heat Pump
If you’re surprised by the size of your gas bill every cycle, you might be shocked to learn just how much of that goes toward hot water. According to Rheem, a leading manufacturer of water heating systems, roughly 27% of your gas bill is earmarked for hot water usage.
When you opt for a heat pump instead of a traditional gas hot water system, you can make a considerable dent in that 27%. Rheem’s research indicates that a heat pump can save you up to 68% of the hot water portion of your gas bill. That equates to an impressive 18.5% reduction in your overall gas bill.
Let’s break it down with a real-world example. If your total gas bill is $1,000, then $270 of that is allocated for hot water. By switching from a gas to an electric heat pump, you could save 68% of that $270, which amounts to $183.60. That’s a substantial saving for each billing cycle.

Heat Pump Hot Water System Rebates
Across Australia, both federal and state governments are encouraging the adoption of renewable energy-powered hot water systems through rebates and financial incentives. There are three rebates available to claim;
- Solar Vic Rebate
- VEECS
- STC
By replacing your inefficient hot water system with a heat pump system, you could qualify for a government solar hot water rebate. These rebates are designed to stimulate investment in renewable energy technologies.
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
Available on a national scale, STCs can significantly reduce the initial cost of installing your Heat Pump Hot Water System. An STC is a measure of renewable energy that is traded for cash or a discount on the price of a new heat pump system. In effect, the STCs are earned by how much more efficient your new system will be. Each STC represents a megawatt-hour (MWh) per year of electricity displaced by an eligible system. Harley Plumbing will provide the STC discount built into your quote. So you can use this as a discount on your new heat pump hot water system. Generally, STC discounts range from $70 to $1000. We will work out all the details for you, so no need for you to do any research yourself.
Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs)
For us in Victoria, VEECs provide another rebate option. These certificates represent one tonne of carbon dioxide decreased through specific energy-saving activities. According to Vic Gov Energy, the average rebate you can expect is as follows;
- Removing an inefficient electric water heater and installing a heat pump water system. Approximately $900 (amount is subject to change)
- Removing an inefficient gas water heater and switching to a heat pump up $385 (amount is subject to change)
Solar Victoria’s Heat Pump Rebate
Residents in Victoria can also take advantage of a 50% rebate, up to $1,000, on eligible heat pump hot water systems. There is paperwork and criteria to meet, but we can take care of all of that for you. Our team will work out if you can get this rebate and if you can we do all the paperwork for you. As is the case for all of the rebates you are eligible for, other plumbers do not always offer this which makes the process harder. But with Harley Plumbing we work out your out-of-pocket cost for the new heat pump system with all the rebates applied. That way you know exactly what you need to pay and we complete all of the paperwork for you – no fuss!
How Much Can I Save on My Gas Bill by Switching to a Heat Pump Hot Water System?
Switching to a heat pump for hot water heating can result in substantial cost savings on your gas bill. According to data from Rheem, a prominent manufacturer in water heating systems, about 27% of your gas bill goes towards heating water. By choosing a heat pump over a conventional gas hot water system, you can save up to 68% on that portion of your bill.
For example, let’s say your total gas bill amounts to $1,000. Around $270 would be allocated for hot water usage. With a heat pump, you could reduce that $270 by 68%, saving you roughly $183.60 per billing cycle. This equates to an 18.5% reduction in your overall gas bill.
What Rebates Are Available for Installing a Heat Pump?
Various rebates and financial incentives are available to encourage the adoption of heat pump hot water systems. These incentives are offered both on a federal and state level. Here are some notable rebates you could qualify for:
Solar Vic Rebate: Residents in Victoria can avail of a 50% rebate, up to $1,000, on eligible heat pump systems.
STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates): Available nationwide, STCs can offer discounts ranging from $70 to $1,000, reducing the upfront cost of your heat pump system.
VEECs (Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates): Specific to Victoria, these certificates offer rebates for activities that reduce carbon emissions, like installing a heat pump.
Who Takes Care of the Rebate Paperwork?
